The Society of Actuaries is a global professional organization for actuaries. It was founded in 1949 as the merger of two major actuarial organizations in the United States: the Actuarial Society of America and the American Institute of Actuaries. The SOA, as described in our Mission and Vision Statement, is an education, research, and professional membership organization. Achieving fellowship or associateship status is based primarily on completing specified educational requirements, with no requirement related to a certain number of years of practical actuarial experience
To join the profession in the United States, prospective actuaries must pass a series of exams given by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), or the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA).
