Narrative Medicine Journal Club

SPS Engage Organizations (internal use only)Student Organizations

The Narrative Medicine Journal Club is a learning initiative in which we as a community read and discuss recent contributions to the field of narrative medicine and related disciplines, including but not limited to such fields as health humanities; bioethics and narrative ethics; critical race theory; disability studies; literary criticism; and public health.

During our monthly sessions, we will engage in lively discussion of one or more articles and share our insights, questions, and experiences with the topics addressed. Circumstances permitting, we will invite guest speakers, such as the authors of papers under discussion, and/or guest scholars who may respond to the paper. We will practice our critical and close reading skills, grapple with pressing questions in narrative medicine and interconnected fields, as well as propose ideas to continue the conversation. We are committed to maintaining a learning community that is as diverse as the sources of the material we will engage with. In the spirit of honoring embodied knowledge and lived experience, we welcome connections between literature and health as they relate to the questions in our discussions. The Journal Club aspires to maintain a discourse within a learning community as diverse as the sources and material we engage with.

Benefits of membership include connection to fellow students, alumni, faculty, and guests as well as participation in regular meetings and discussions. Members will be the first to know as we schedule and promote events, talks, and invite potential guest speakers, such as the authors of papers under discussion, and/or guest scholars who may respond to papers we are reading. The Journal Club will provide a separate forum outside of the classroom to practice critical close reading skills, grapple with pressing questions in narrative medicine and interconnected fields, as well as propose ideas to continue the conversation. Engagement with the scholarly literature will help to prepare club members to make their own contributions to conferences, journals, and beyond. As we stay current and well-versed in the advances in the field, we also nurture our own capacities as thinkers, practitioners, and leaders.
