For “Armageddon Time,” the filmmaker James Grey drilled deep into memories from his childhood in 1980, when he learned a searing lesson about power and prejudice in America.
- “Armageddon Time,” a “tender and lacerating film” that stars Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, “is — astutely, uncomfortably and in the end tragically — about privilege,” A.O. Scott writes. It’s in theaters today.
- “I never wanted to be a banner of identity of Black people in the favela, but it was my own identity,” the Brazilian painter Maxwell Alexandre says. “Pardo é Papel: The Glorious Victory and New Power,” his one-man show at the Shed in Manhattan, is on view through Jan. 8.
