Unpaid Internship

For unpaid internships, refer to the The Test for Unpaid Interns and Students on the Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under The Fair Labor Standards Act. We strongly encourage employers that hire SPS students to offer monetary pay, stipend  or other forms of compensation for their experiences.

Employers wishing to post unpaid internships must comply with the following:

  • Verify to CDL that the organization meets the US Department of Labor and applicable state law standard test for unpaid interns and students;
  • Include in the job description specific information about supervision and training provided.
  • Specify whether the student is expected to seek academic credit.
  • The internship must coincide with SPS’s fall, spring or summer semesters.
