The Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) internship program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate, graduate and law students like you to get hands-on experience in public service while learning more about transportation challenges and advancements in the U.S.

Students from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Due to COVID-19 considerations, it has not yet been determined if the Summer 2022 program will be in-person or virtual. Interns will engage in either in-person or remote work as directed by mentors and program guidelines.
To be eligible to participate you must meet the following criteria:
- Be U.S. Citizen
- Be currently enrolled in a degree-granting program of study at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (visit ed.gov/accreditation to verify your school and/or program of study), 3.0 GPA or higher desired.
- Be a junior or senior for the upcoming fall semester if you are an undergraduate student. Undergraduate applicants from Junior, Tribal, or Community Colleges must have completed their first year.
- Be enrolled in the upcoming fall semester if you are a graduate student.
- Law applicants must be entering their second or third year of law school in the upcoming Fall Semester.
- Applicants who are scheduled to graduate during the spring or summer semesters of this academic year are not eligible for consideration for the STIPDG unless: (1) they have been accepted for graduate school enrollment; (2) they have been accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher education; or (3) their acceptance is pending. There will be no exceptions.
- Former STIPDG interns may apply but will not necessarily receive preferential consideration.
- If you are accepted into the program, you will be required to go through a background investigation to determine suitability to work for U.S. DOT. You will also be required to sign a Code of Conduct and a Participant Agreement.
During this 10-week program, you will intern five days per week at the U.S. Department of Transportation, with exception of some optional program opportunities throughout the summer. Your internship placement may be in the Washington, D.C. offices, or in one of several regional locations across the United States. Daily tasks will vary depending on your background, abilities and the office in which you’re working.
Compensation includes a $4,000 stipend for undergraduate students, or a $5,000 stipend for graduate and law school students. Sponsorship covers the cost of the program and, only if held in-person, fully-furnished housing (if needed) and roundtrip travel to your assignment location (if your permanent residence is more than 50 miles away). You will be responsible for living expenses and local transportation.
Housing and Living
Due to current circumstances, it has not yet been determined if the Summer 2022 program will be in-person or virtual. If in-person, fully-furnished housing is provided by TWC for all participants who qualify (if your permanent residence is more than 50 miles away). Housing is arranged in close proximity to the work sites, both in Washington, D.C. and in regional locations across the United States. Housing accommodations can, and typically do, require shared-living arrangements with other interns. Every effort is made to arrange housing near essential amenities like grocery stores, public transit and medical facilities.
You may be eligible to receive academic credit for your participation in this program. However, credits are determined and awarded by each university. TWC does not grant credit. You are responsible for arranging any academic credit through your college or university. You should discuss arrangements with you institution, prior to starting the program.
You need to submit the following documents along with your application:
- Official Transcript/Grade Report/Report: Submit your most recent reflecting your cumulative GPA. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable but should clearly display your first and last name, and school logo.
- Letter of Recommendation: It may be from a department chair, professor, advisor or employer. It should not come from a family member or friend. You will have to enter the recommender’s email directly into your online application, so they can submit their letter directly to TWC. Please inform your recommender that their letter must be received through the online application system no later than the application deadline, January 31, 2022, at 11:59 p.m.
- Resumé: Submit one reflecting work experience, volunteerism, awards, leadership and extra-curricular activities; if possible, highlight the type of transportation experience you are seeking.
- Writing Sample
- Undergraduate Students: Submit an essay, (one-page, double-spaced, minimum 12-point type), on your transportation interests, describing how your participation in the STIPDG will enhance your educational and career plans and goals.
- Graduate Students: Submit a writing sample (2 pages max.) representing your educational and career plans and goals.
- Law Students: Submit a legal writing sample (5 pages max.)
