The mission of the WSHRC is to eliminate and prevent discrimination in Washington State through the fair application of the law, efficient use of resources, and establishment of productive partnerships in the community.
The Washington State Human Rights Commission (WSHRC) was created by the Legislature in 1949, the WSHRC is responsible for administering and enforcing the Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD).
Who we are looking for:
You need to be someone that has the ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret information, testimony and data. You need to be an effective communicator (multi-lingual is a bonus) verbally and in writing. You will need to be an active listener with the ability to summarize what has been communicated with reasoned, persuasive communications, reports and determinations. You will need to be someone that can maintain professional, tactful and courteous behavior while interacting with parties, the public, and co-workers while negotiating the resolution of disputes.

Some of what you will enjoy doing will include:
- Gathers and preserves evidence.
- Conducts interviews, reviews and analyzes position statements submitted by parties or legal counsel, and other defenses and documentation submitted by parties to the complaint.
- Obtains rebuttal information, performs on-site reviews, requests relevant documentary evidence.
- Analyzes, evaluates and applies fact patterns based on case law, precedents and elements of proof.
- Writes and submits well-reasoned formal determinations.
- Confers with the public by phone, via email, or in person regarding alleged violations of state and federal discrimination laws to determine Commission jurisdiction and criteria for filing a complaint, and provides referrals when appropriate.
- Receives and analyzes written inquiries and Intake Questionnaires determining jurisdiction and deciding if the facts meet the prima facie elements of a discrimination complaint.
- Drafts formal complaint affidavits for individuals.
- Initiates compromise discussions in an attempt to resolve disputes between parties, including; complainant, respondent, attorneys, company or agency management, union officials, etc.
- Prepares, executes, and signs legally binding settlement documents.
- Conducts education and outreach.
- Writes and submits well-reasoned formal recommendations.
Four years of experience involving investigations or closely-related field
Associate’s degree OR Two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) with major emphasis in business administration, public administration, law, social sciences, or directly allied field
Two years of experience involving investigations or closely-related field
3 years of college (90 semester or 135 quarter credits) OR a Bachelor’s degree
One year of experience involving investigations or closely-related field
Ability to read and write in a language other than English

NOTE: This position is in a bargaining unit and falls under the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the state of Washington and the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
