Full Job Description
We are seeking seven (7) summer interns in our Boston office (or virtually) who are currently pursuing their MBA or Master’s degree preferably in Finance or Economics. Projects assignments are available on our Healthcare Consulting, Private Equity Research, Marketable Equities Research, Diverse Manager Research, Portfolio Construction and Operational Due Diligence teams.
Upon successful completion of the internship, interns may be invited back to participate in a Sr. Investment Associate Rotational Program lasting up to 2 years (4 rotations) post-graduation. This is a program that NEPC has designed specifically to attract diverse candidates and give them broad exposure to different areas of the firm. Associates will cycle through different departments to gain exposure and experience. Successful Sr. Investment Associates will be placed in a permanent assignment within the firm over a 12-24-month cycle.
We are seeking candidates who have already had some exposure to the investment industry either through a permanent position or prior internship. The ideal candidate should have a strong analytical skillset, excellent written and verbal communication skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), close attention to detail and a willingness to learn. The candidate should be working toward an MBA or Master’s degree ideally majoring in Finance or Economics.
Diverse Manager Committee Internship Project
This intern will join NEPC’s Diverse Manager Committee to assist in planning content, logistics and marketing for the Investment Diversity Advisory Council DEI Summit. This will involve inviting allocators, academics, managers and other subject matter experts with the goal of building a database of best practices that will push the asset management industry further toward equitable inclusion. The intern will also collaborate with the Diverse Manager Committee and the Marketing team on the design and rollout of the IDAC Resource Library which will store these best practices along with roadmaps for integrating DEI into investment programs.
Portfolio Construction Internship Project I
This intern will join the Portfolio Construction team to assist in creating a tool for consultants to run ad hoc analysis on investments, using investment return streams. The tool will be built int either Python or R programming language. Successful creation of this tool will create significant efficiency by streamlining the research request process to give consultants access to run these analyses from their own desktop. This assignment will allow the intern to practice front and back end programming skills while building a tool with high impact across the firm. The intern will also gain broad exposure to the asset management industry across all asset classes.
Portfolio Construction Internship Project II
This intern will join the Portfolio Construction team and will be focused on factor research, with an ultimate deliverable being a position paper by NEPC on what factors are the most meaningful and how we think about factors in client portfolios. There is existing research on specific factors in equity and credit, so the project will be a meta analysis of the work that’s already out there. It would be helpful (not required) if the intern had any background or general knowledge of factor research across equity and/or credit. The intern will gain a deep and insightful understanding of a very relevant and important topic in the asset management world.
Private Equity Internship Project
This intern with join the Private Equity team to integrate its private equity attribution model into something more user-friendly and accessible. These models assist in NEPC’s quantitative diligence process and ultimately help to access a manager’s ability to invest NEPC client’s capital. The ideal candidate will have python and web development skills, along with an ability to work independently, has attention to detail, and be a team player. This is an important project because the Private Equity team relies on this analysis daily. Creating a tool to simplify this process would be extremely valuable. This assignment will allow the intern to practice a coding language, build a tool with high impact across the firm. The opportunity will also allow them to learn how private equity works and how clients use the different areas of private equity to meet their investment objectives.
Marketable Equities Internship Project
This intern will join the Marketable Securities team to assist in the evaluation and rating of asset management firms on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). They will continue to refine NEPC’s methodology and scoring rubric. This is an important initiative for NEPC as we are fully committed as a firm to offering Diverse Managers to our clients as an integral part of their portfolio. This project will involve the evaluation and assessment of asset manager’s DEI efforts across a number of key categories. The project will result in analysis and aggregation of results to provide industry trends and areas of improvement for asset managers. This intern will gain hands-on experience applying a quantitative measure to assess a qualitative factor (progress toward Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) in the manager research process.
Operational Due Diligence Internship Project
This intern will join the Operational Due Diligence team to assist in launching NEPC’s annual Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence survey. The ODD survey is an integral portion of the firm’s ongoing monitoring efforts over all of the hedge fund managers NEPC clients are invested with. The survey entails tracking and reviewing manager responses, following up with non-responders, identifying and investigating red flags, and compiling survey results. Clients receive survey information related to the managers and strategies in their portfolio, and high-level survey results identifying trends and developments are published on NEPC’s website.
Healthcare Consulting Internship Project
US healthcare systems and organizations seek to provide high quality and equitable healthcare to diverse communities. This intern will join the Healthcare team to explore how healthcare systems and related organizations can increase diverse manager representation in their investment portfolios. This project is important because it will support the Healthcare team’s diverse manager research and support growing client demand for peer data on DEI across healthcare organizations. The intern will be able to work collaboratively with the Healthcare team, Research and the Diverse Manager Committee. This will provide the intern with a real world project that is relevant to the investment consulting and healthcare industries. Strong analytical, communication and written skills are required for this assignment.
