Incumbent serves as Social Work Supervisor for Elkhart County Health Department, responsible for overseeing The Healthy Babies Prenatal Care Coordination, Baby & Me Tobacco Free, Fetal & Infant Mortality Review, and Safe Sleep Programs, maintaining client caseloads, providing pregnant clients with support, overseeing assigned staff, and reviewing assigned staff’s caseloads.
DUTIES:
Supervises assigned staff, including reviewing position documentation, interviewing candidates, making hiring decisions, orienting new subordinates, planning/delegating work assignments, establishing specific work goals, training/developing assigned staff, evaluating performance results, reviewing salaries, keeping supervisor/staff informed of organization developments, and maintaining discipline.
Oversees various Department programs/functions, including The Healthy Babies Prenatal Care Coordination, Baby & Me Tobacco Free, Fetal & Infant Mortality Review, and Safe Sleep Programs.
Maintains client caseload and performs intake process, often involving complex social problems in need of assessment.
Addresses client issues without judgment, refers clients to outside resources/agencies, documents all encounters with clients, and enters client information into medical record system.
Represents Department on County-wide Child Protection Team and Child Fatality Team
Develops/maintains educational curriculum, addressing current research and trends related to infant mortality.
Supports and promotes breastfeeding to WIC participants.
Attends/conducts team meetings and case reviews, addressing concerns and answering questions from assigned staff.
Completes detailed public service applications and drafts/submits statistics reports.
Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Completed Master’s degree in social work.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Ability to meet all hiring and retention requirements, including obtaining and maintaining Indiana social work license.
Thorough knowledge of macro/micro social systems, clinical documentation practices, professional journals, and work-related Indiana statutes.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare correspondence and various detailed reports as required.
Ability to properly operate standard office equipment and computer software programs, such as computer, medical record system, calculator, copier, scanner, fax machine, and vehicle.
Ability to compile, collate, analyze, evaluate, coordinate, and fabricate data and take action based on data analysis.
Ability to count, compute, calculate, and perform arithmetic operations.
Ability to file, post, and mail materials.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, IDOH, doctor’s offices, social service agencies, Division of Child Services, Child Fatality Review, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to supervise assigned staff, including reviewing position documentation, interviewing candidates, making hiring decisions, orienting new subordinates, planning/delegating work assignments, establishing specific work goals, training/developing assigned staff, evaluating performance results, reviewing salaries, keeping supervisor/staff informed of organization developments, and maintaining discipline.

III. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent’s performance may have a major impact on overall department operations and functions, and work is periodically reviewed for attainment of objectives and effect on Departmental goals/objectives, which are clearly specified, and conformity with overall policies and procedures of the department. Unusual problems or situations are discussed with the supervisor.
IV. PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, IDOH, doctor’s offices, social service agencies, Division of Child Services, Child Fatality Review, and the public for the purposes of exchanging information and ideas, rendering service, instructing, and mentoring.
Incumbent reports directly to Community Services Manager.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties in standard office and home environments, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, wearing protective equipment, lifting objects weighing under 25 pounds, keyboarding, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, close/far vision, and driving. Incumbent may be exposed to potentially irate/hostile individuals.
Incumbent occasionally works weekends and travels out of town for training and conferences, sometimes overnight, and regularly works extended hours and evenings.
