The Senior Financial Analyst will assist in the management of campus budget operations and in monitoring and reviewing budget-related financial information for the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), and/or specific projects as assigned. Core responsibilities of this role relate to the engagement with the central administrative shared-services units and CUIMC’s four schools, and via Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, with Columbia Doctors. The Senior Financial Analyst is a member of the Office of Budget and Financial Planning (OBF) and reports to the Senior Director of Budget and Financial Analysis.
Supports the Senior Director in reviewing budget and financial data for CUIMC administrative departments and / or schools in order to forecast financial trends and identify potential financial risks. Analyzes financial statements and underlying data, including revenues and costs to ensure analytically sound basis for forecasts. Prepares analytical reports for presentation to senior executives, including actual to budget variances and revenue and expenditure trends
Helps maintain quality control of CUIMC campus budget entries into University financial systems to ensure accurate and complete assembly of budget projections. Serves as liaison to CUIMC central administrative shared-services units and /or schools on financial systems issues and financial accounting issues required for accurate entry and reporting of relevant financial data. Coordinates with client contacts and internal staff regarding deadlines and task requirements.
Assists the Senior Director as needed in developing the FAIR (Financial Allocation of Infrastructure Resources) cost allocation model controlling distribution of CUIMC central costs to campus schools. Develops forecasts as well as regular monitoring of planned vs. actual performance of the FAIR model. Periodically processes related fund transfers and monitors.
Under the oversight of senior management, maintains and improves Columbia’s SMART Standards for accounting and reporting, including the methodologies by which school and departmental revenues and expenses are allocated to specific programs and faculty members. Advises and trains school and departmental staff on the use of these standards to ensure accurate reporting of campus financial activity as a means of advancing continued improvement of campus operations.
Assists the Assistant Director of Analysis and Reporting in providing suites of reports as well as ad hoc on-demand analysis. Helps ensure data security and quality.
Responsible for special projects as required. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested. Gains familiarity with complementary budgetary/financial functions, such as the capital budget and potential financing strategies, in order to assist with necessary analysis if required.

Bachelor’s degree, as well as 4 years experience in financial planning and analysis. Experience, in higher education, an academic medical center or hospital or in an equivalent environment preferred. MPA, MBA or comparable advance degree preferred.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a well-developed knowledge of quantitative analysis capable of working with minimal oversight to solve a problem or meet a need. Superior financial analysis skills required, including the ability to prepare detailed financial reports and explain complex financial information by analyzing variances and their drivers, and presenting forward-looking applications. Attention to detail, plus the ability to work closely and collaboratively with a diverse group of administrators is essential. Expert-level computer proficiency (Microsoft Excel and Word) required, including an in-depth knowledge of spreadsheet packages.
